HAPPY people. How do you do?
I’m going to get a little bit personal with this one.
At the start of this blog I mentioned that I set out for this year to be a YES year. I will take on challenges that come my way and will not shy away from anything that is of interest to me. So I thought I’d share with you one such challenge, or rather opportunity that presented itself to me.
I launched this blog end of January ’16, told my friends and family about it, and tried to get the word out there even though I literally only had two posts on it (and now only four haha) 😛
A couple of my dear friends shared it with their friends on Facebook, and just a couple of hours later a friend of a friend checks out the blog and reaches out to me. He is the founder/managing-director/editor of a dope magazine called TAP (The African Perspective). He told me he sees potential and would like to collaborate with me at some point in the future. I mean, you can only imagine how impressed I was. I had to go take another look at this blog and ask myself “What the hell did he see?!”, because frankly, I didn’t think it was all that awesome (terrible self-sabotage thinking hey). In any case, I thought, well, I must have done something right and I better keep at it. Besides, collaborating with writers and other creatives was one of the main objectives for this journey.
Some weeks down the line, the very same editor hits me up and asks if I’d like to collaborate and write an article for the magazine’s next issue. Stunned much! The piece “Joburg Night Life” would be a follow up to an article in the mag’s previous issue which was on Nairobi Night Life. Now I could have doubted myself a hundred times (I did a little lol), but I thought what the heck. This is the founder and editor. He saw something in my writing, it’s my YES year so I’m doing this. Not only would this be awesome exposure but it’s a great platform for me to practice my craft. AND as a cherry on top, the magazine aims to show what’s truly happening in Africa. Why wouldn’t I want to be a part of this? When I lived in Canada, I came across some of the worst portrayals of my continent and if there was anything I could do to contribute to a change in those perspectives, I would do it without hesitation.
So there it was…an article to write on Joburg Night Life! It was sooo much fun but it wasn’t easy peasy and without its hurdles. I mean, my macbook died one random Sunday and the whole hard drive had to be replaced and some parts of my draft got lost. But hey c’est la vie. I adopted a positive attitude and kept it moving. I got a temporary replacement computer and didn’t let it stop me.
Writing the piece became quite an adventure. I had an idea of writing an all-encompassing piece, I had to step out of my comfort zone and consider other forms of entertainment. I learned so much about the city and its going-ons! Way more than I actually thought there was. In fact, the length of my article was so darn long, I had incredible amounts of content to slash! The horror. Hahah. This led to yet another incredible moment when the editor saw the article as ‘rich in information’ and not particularly ‘ridiculously stupidly long’ heheh. Meaning what? That I was on the right track. So I kept at it. He even suggested we shorten the print version and keep a longer full guide for the online publication! What I’m getting to is that there will always be a challenge, when a testing moment presents itself, that’s exactly what it is, a test. It doesn’t mean you stop, you go ahead and problem solve. Choose the sign you want to see, choose the lesson you want to learn, I believe we truly create our own realities.
I’m looking forward to more opportunities that present themselves to me this year and in the furthest future. Also, a quick thanks to my girls S, F and G for the support during this time 😉 And to all, I dare you to accept your next challenge and attack it like a wolf! I promise you won’t be disappointed 🙂
So Yo! Joburg has the craziest variety of options for night life. Anyone who hasn’t visited this beautiful vibrant city, I urge you to book your flight (yes, book the damn flight) and check the article over at link to article pg. 40! If you’re a resident or live nearby, go on and check it out too, you’ll be surprised how many Night Life options you have. All you need is one night 😉
If you aren’t in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?
